A tragic incident occurred on June 13 when a landslide struck in the vicinity of Tharyarkonehmaw village, Lonekhin village tract, Hpakant, located in Kachin State. The landslide, which occurred in an area known for jade scavenging, claimed the life of a man and left three others severely injured.

Eyewitnesses reported that the collapse originated from a dump site towering over 200 feet high. One witness remarked that had the landslide struck directly, all four scavengers would likely have perished. Currently, only hand-digging operations are permitted in the area, as heavy machinery operations are halted at present.

The victim, a 30-year-old man, hailed from the Mamon and Spot area, according to those close to him. However, details regarding his identity were not disclosed by the excavation leader. The deceased's parents retrieved his body without seeking assistance from the rescue team.

Hpakant has a history of annual landslides during the rainy season, resulting in numerous fatalities over the years. From 2012 to 2021, the region witnessed over a hundred deaths annually due to such incidents.
