The Chin Health Organization reports that an outbreak of dysentery in Paletwa and Mindat has tragically claimed the lives of 14 individuals. This area in Chin State, which is currently experiencing prolonged and severe armed conflict, has been severely affected by the disease.

Dysentery, a highly infectious disease caused by contaminated water sources, manifests symptoms between 2 hours to 5 days after infection. Without prompt and effective treatment, the mortality rate can range from 30% to 50%, whereas with timely medical intervention, the risk drops significantly to only 1%, as stated by the Chin Health Organization (CHO).

In light of the situation, CHO has issued crucial guidelines to prevent further spread of the disease. They advise the public to consume freshly cooked food, avoid leftover rice, and store food securely to prevent contamination by insects like flies. Additionally, mothers are encouraged to exclusively breastfeed infants and ensure the use of proper sanitation facilities. Handwashing with soap after using the toilet is emphasized, and anyone experiencing symptoms of diarrhea is urged to seek immediate medical attention.
