Yangon International Airport has been upgraded to handle up to 19 flights in an hour but currently only eight flights are being serviced per hour, according to airport sources.

According to international standards and handling capacity of Myanmar's Air Traffic Control, Yangon airport now has the capacity to accommodate up to 170,000 flights a year.

"We have and will continue to improve infrastructure, safety and efficiency in processes. YIA (Yangon International Airport) can now handle wide-body aircrafts including B777-300ER and A350. The current capacity will allow YIA to meet foreseeable growth needs for many years to come even with a single runway operation. With further enhancements, innovation, technology and upgrades, YIA has the potential to increase the capacity much further," said Jose Angeja, chief operating officer of Yangon Aerodrome Company Limited (YACL).

YACL took over the airport service and management under public-private-partnership system under the permission from the Civil Aviation Department of the Ministry of Transport and Communications in October 2015. According to the agreement, YACL is entitled to 30-year service and has the right to renew 20 more years.

The airport has increased movements (one movement is one takeoff or one landing) per year from 62,937 in October 2015 to 77,000 per year currently.
