TAIPEI (The China Post) – Taiwan’s economy has been crippled by three presidents who were all law graduates of National Taiwan University (NTU), Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu claimed yesterday.

Han was referring to former presidents Chen Shui-bian and Ma Ying-jeou, and incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen.

All three were NTU law graduates, and Taiwan’s economy and competitiveness tanked after their terms, he contended.

Han, who is currently on a nine-day visit to the United States, made the remarks during an economic forum in Los Angeles Saturday while answering a question from the audience.

The sharp criticisms drew media attention back in Taiwan.

Han said he realized that Taiwan has not improved over the past two decades after he made a trip to Singapore, Hong Kong, and Macao.

He urged Taiwan’s politicians to strive for the benefit of the people and not for the pursuit of power.

Ma’s office, however, rebutted Han’s claim, citing several tough challenges the country overcame during his term from 2008 to 2016, including the global financial crisis in 2008-2009.
