Kawkareik sees tentative return after brutal fighting
Published 29 April 2024

Residents of Kawkareik, Kayin State, cautiously returned to their war-torn town starting April 27, following months of displacement due to clashes between the Myanmar military and a combined force of Karen National Union (KNU) and People's Defense Force (PDF) fighters.

The fighting, which began in December 2023, drove residents from their homes as shelling ravaged the town. Local reports indicate civilian casualties and widespread damage, with hundreds of homes burned or destroyed by artillery fire from both sides. The exact cause of these fires remains unclear, with accusations traded between the military and KNU/PDF.

Despite the devastation, a semblance of stability has emerged. Myanmar's military, along with the Border Guard Force (BGF), regained control of Kawkareik and the strategically important Myawady Infantry Battalion 275 on April 23.

This shift has allowed some displaced residents to return and assess the damage. Many, however, face a daunting reality – their homes lie in ashes. The Myawady-Kawkareik Asia Road remains inaccessible, forcing a longer journey through Nabu.

Recognizing the dire situation, Kayin State and Kawkareik District officials are providing returning residents with essential aid. This includes debris removal, security measures, relocation assistance, and the stockpiling of rice, food, and other relief supplies. The long road to rebuilding lives and restoring peace in Kawkareik has begun, the State Administration Council reported.
