Supreme Court agrees to hear appeal for the cases against U Win Myint and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

The Supreme Court agreed to hear appeal for the cases against U Win Myint and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, sources said.

On April 19, the lawyers representing U Win Myint and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi applied for appeal at the Supreme Court in Nay Pyi Taw.

The court heard for appeal for the cases in which U Win Myint and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi were prosecuted and sentenced to three years in prison under Section 130 (a) of the Penal Code for improperly influencing the Union Election Commission (UEC) in the 2020 general election, and for the case in which Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was prosecuted and sentenced to three years in prison under Section 3(1) (c) / 9 of the Official Secrets Act.

In addition, the court also heard appeal against charges related to five cases dealing with the purchase and lease of a helicopter in which U Win Myint and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi were prosecuted and sentenced to seven years in prison under the anti-corruption laws.

When asked about the news that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who was detained in Nay Pyi Taw prison, has been moved back to her home from the prison, the spokesman of the State Administration Council, Major General Zaw Min Tun denied it.

At present, U Win Myint has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for eight cases and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for 19 cases. Both of the sentences are reduced by two years on December 6, 2021.
