The application for establishing a political party named “National Politics Party”, under the leadership of some former military generals, is still under the scrutiny of the Union Election Commission, said UEC chairman Hla Thein.

Hla Thein made the remark in response to the media question about the party formation during the recess of a teachership course on voter list making conducted by the UEC held at Grand Amara Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw.

"If all documentation process is complete, we will allow the formation. But we are now waiting as it has not been completed yet," said Hla Thein.

Some ex-generals submitted the application for party registration to the UEC in July last year. The applicants include ex-lieutenant general Soe Maung, who served as minister at the President Office, and ex-major general Lun Maung, who served as auditor general, under the Thein Sein government.

Asked what is still needed for party registration approval, the UEC chairman said: "We cannot disclose details now. As soon as all requirements are met, we announce our approval for party registration."

UEC spokesperson Myint Naing said relevant ministries are being asked for the inspection of the party formation, according to the procedures.

"We have not received all necessary details. We are asking relevant ministries such as immigration, home affairs and religious affairs if necessary. They are relevant," said Myint Naing.

Soe Maung completed the 17th intake of Defence Services Academy. He served as advocate general with a rank of lieutenant general in the army. In the 2010 election, he was elected as lower house MP for Yesagyo Township Constituency representing the Union Solidarity and Development Party. He served as minister for the President Office under Thein Sein's government. He  competed in the 2015 election but lost.
