Region parliament constituency (1) in Thabeikkyin Township, Mandalay Region, had over 49,000 eligible voters the by-election held in November 3 but over 29,000 voters did not come to polling stations to vote, according to sources released by the Township Election Subcommission.

National League for Democracy candidate Soe Lwin won the by-election with 12,502 votes defeating his opponent from other political parties including the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).

The constituency had 47 polling stations for 49,622 eligible voters and the election subcommission announced by-election results on November 4.

USDP received 5,220 votes, National Unity Party 1,971 votes, Democratic Party (Myanmar) 320 votes, National Democratic Force 314 votes, Union Farmer-Labour Force  Party 172 votes and National Unity Democratic Party 46 votes.

"Fewer people came to polling stations to vote because they might lack interest in by-election as it could not change the government whoever wins. Another thing is campaign for arousing public interest in election. This is a weakness of respective election commissions and political parties," said winning NLD candidate Soe Lwin.

The by-election for Thabeikkyin Township was held on November 3 and only 40 percent of eligible voters came to the polling booths.

Local people said that public voters had little interest in elections.
