The number of eligible voters for 2020 General Election has increased by nearly three million compared with the figures in 2015 General Election, according to the Union Election Commission (UEC).

Myint Naing, Spokesperson of the UEC said: “The UEC is working on the compilation of eligible voters. The number of eligible voters has increased by nearly three million. This is a rough estimate. The compilation of eligible voters has completed. The UEC will start working on other processes later in the year 2019.”

Out of 34,295,334 eligible voters, 23,946,709 voters gave their votes in the election held on November 8, 2015. The voter turnout rate is 69.82 per cent, according to the UEC.

The advance vote for the lower house parliamentary seats was 6.01 per cent, 6.07 per cent for the upper house parliamentary seats and 6.24 per cent for region and state parliamentary seats, according to the UEC.

A total of 6,038 candidates—5,728 candidates from 91 political parties and 310 independent candidates—ran for the parliamentary seats in 2015 General Election. A total of 323 candidates for the lower house parliament, 168 for the upper house parliament and 659 for region and state parliaments (including ethnic affairs constituencies).

The UEC released the eligible voters lists in four batches in the previous election.

There are 14 vacant constituencies as the MPs died, are facing court trails and resigned.

“There is no plan to hold the by-election before the 2020 General Election though more than 10 constituencies are vacant,” Spokesperson Myint Naing told the Daily Eleven.

Since the current government taking office, the UEC held the first by-election for 19 vacant constituencies on April 1, 2017 and second by-election for 13 vacant constituencies on November 3, 2018.
