In the wake of intense fighting that erupted in Kok Bain Village, located in Kawkareik Township, Kayin State, villagers are fleeing to safer havens. Their fear stems from the very real threat of their homes being consumed by flames.

On March 24, an armed group launched an attack on the police station in Kok Bain village, igniting a fierce battle. The Tatmadaw (military) responded not only with air strikes but also marine assaults. As a result, the villagers sought refuge in nearby settlements, as recounted by one of the residents from Kok Bain.

"Unable to reach Tayanar village on March 24, the villagers resorted to crossing the Ataran River by boat, eventually finding safety in Khayar village. Some even sought shelter in the caves near Minhla village. However, their immediate needs are pressing: drinking water, food, and medicines are urgently required for those displaced and taking refuge in the caves," said a person from Kok Bain village.

While accommodations and food are relatively accessible for the displaced villagers who fled to the town, those huddled in the caves face greater challenges. Their primary wish is to preserve their homes, even amidst the chaos.

The toll of the conflict has been severe. During the fighting on March 24 and 25, at least four villagers were injured. Additionally, houses, monasteries, and nunneries suffered damage due to heavy artillery shells, leaving the community in distress.

Tragically, a child and a woman were wounded when heavy shells exploded within the village on March 26. With security forces stationed in Tayarna village, the fear of further clashes looms large. Consequently, nearby villagers in Kayin State and locals from Kyaikmaraw Township in Mon State are fleeing to safer areas.

The ongoing strife in Kok Bain village has forced residents from Kayin State to seek refuge in nearby regions, including Mawlamyine Township in Mon State.
