More than 270 candidates including political party members have submitted their applications to run for the Yangon City Development Committee’s election, said Aung Khaing, chair of Yangon City Development Committee Election on January 29.

Candidates who will run for the post for YCDC members shall pay the registration fee of Ks 500,000 and candidates who will run for the township chair posts, Ks 200,000. Candidates can cancel their applications in time if they no longer want to run for the posts. The registration fee will be refunded.

Members of some political parties have registered to run for the election. The bylaw allows them to run for a seat in the election. But they are required to submit the permissions of relevant political parties, he added.

Candidates can officially use flags and emblems of parties with the permission of relevant political parties. They can make withdrawals if there is objection. Or else, they can do it according to the parties’ directives.

A total of 277 candidates will compete for 105 posts in the YCDC election scheduled for March 31—six YCDC members, 99 township chairs and two members for 33 townships.
