Yangon region may see increasing aging population as the number of working-age population and the youth population ratio continues to widen, according to the Yangon Region Census Report.

According to the research paper on aging population released by the Population Department, the number of aging populations in the urban areas is higher than that in the rural areas. Magway, Bago, Mandalay, Sagaing, Ayeyawady and Yangon Regions see rapidly growing number of aging citizens. The number of population aged 60 and above is 4.5 million. The number of aging population is expected to reach 13 million by 2050. The survey is conducted using the data from the 2014 nationwide census. In 2050, the age structure of population in Myanmar will be similar to that of Singapore. The number of population aged 60 and above will account for around 20 per cent of the total population. In 2050, the number of aging populations will be nearly same as that of the children aged under 15, according to the survey.

According to the research, between 1973 and 2014, the annual population growth rate was just 1.4 per cent, but the number of populations aged 60 and above increased at a rate of 2.4 per cent annually. If the population growth rate continues to increase at the current rate, Myanmar will face a decline in the number of total populations and the highest increase in the number of aging populations, in the major regions and states in 2030.

On December 30, 2016, the Union Parliament approved the Law on the Aging Population. The bylaws are being drafted. There are 81 homes for the aged established by the CSOs and social organizations. The Social Welfare Department has opened the day-care centers for the aged, according to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

With the aim of ensuring income security of the aged, the government has started the Social Pension Scheme for the aged, since 2017-2018 fiscal year. Currently, more than 100,000 elderly people are enjoying the social security pension.
