Train services between Mawlamyine and Yangon have resumed as of today, March 25, according to officials at Mawlamyine Railway Station.

The first down train (No.82) departed Mawlamyine at 8:30 am, while the up train (No.81) left Yangon at 6:30 am. However, passenger numbers remain low due to recent service disruptions and the ongoing security situation.

"There were only 90 passengers on the Mawlamyine-Yangon train today," a station official said. "This is likely because of the frequent cancellations and restarts of service." The official expects ridership to increase in the coming days.

Train ticket sales have also resumed, with a new schedule: upper-class tickets are available for purchase three days in advance, and ordinary-class tickets are available for purchase one day in advance. Tickets are sold daily from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The recent service suspension stemmed from a mine attack on March 18. A cargo train near Thaton Township was derailed when a mine exploded near a bridge. While repairs to the bridge and tracks were completed, ongoing security concerns related to airdropped bombs delayed the resumption of train services.

This is not the first time the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway has been targeted. Several townships along the route, including Paung, Thaton, Bilin, and Kyaikhto, have seen repeated attacks on train tracks, passenger trains, and cargo trains.
