Thailand authorities crack down on cross-border internet scams
Published 4 March 2024

In a significant operation, a Thai combined-force recently conducted raids in Ranong city, targeting illegal distribution, sale, and use of internet Wi-Fi.

The crackdown also led to the apprehension of online fraudsters, who are now behind bars.

The Thai authorities are actively collaborating with administrative bodies in Kawthaung Township, Myanmar, with the aim of curbing online fraud activities along the Myanmar-Thai border.

Despite never having heard of internet Wi-Fi connections, local residents in Kawthaung town have witnessed a surge in online scams originating from Thailand.

Lieutenant General of the Thai forces revealed that they raided five locations, including communication towers, on March 1 and 2. Their investigations uncovered crucial information about phone usage by call center gangs. Additionally, they traced networks within Kawthaung town, situated on the Thai-Myanmar border, including electronic and ghost SIM cards.

As the dust settles from the Ranong city raids, Thai authorities are now gearing up to target other locations where online frauds have proliferated.

The joint efforts between Thailand and Myanmar seek to safeguard citizens from digital deception and maintain security across the border.
