Fire at the Penwegone Market in Bago Region destroys 435 shops

More than 435 shops were ravaged by fire, affecting 11 families due to fire at Penwegone Market in Bago Region, according to Bago Region government.

 The blaze, which ignited around 7 pm on April 2, was finally brought under control by 9 pm, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The fire also burnt down 10 houses nearby of the market and 13 additional shops, compounding the impact on the community.

The total loss from the inferno amounted to Ks39.7 million, with the destruction of shops, homes, and property.

Responding swiftly to the crisis, the Bago Region government has taken action. Plans are underway to construct a temporary market on municipal land, offering a lifeline to affected vendors.

Furthermore, the Bago Region Chief Minister has directed officials to prioritize the installation of fire hydrants within the market premises to prevent future disasters.

In a gesture of support, the government has provided aid to the affected households. Relief packages containing essential items such as eggs, dry noodles, and beverages have been distributed, alongside financial assistance and provisions to cover one month's worth of rice rations for 48 individuals and Ks200,000 each for loss of homes. Additionally, subsidies have been allocated to firefighters who valiantly battled the blaze.
