The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) secured seven out of 13 vacant seats in the by-Election held on November 3.
The NLD won Tamwe Township Constituency, Minbu Township Constituency-2, Ottwin Township Constituency-1, Shan Ethnic Affairs parliament seat for Mandalay Region, Thabeikkyin Township Constituency-1, Myingyan Township Constituency and Kanpetlet Constituency.
The opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) secured three vacant seats—Seikkan Township Constituency-2, Kachin State Upper House Constituency-2 and Tamu Township Constituency-2.
Chin League for Democracy (CLD) won Matupi Township Constituency-1.
Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) secured a lower house parliamentary seat in Lechar Township Constituency.
Independent candidate U Tin Maung Win, son of Dr. Aye Maung, won Yathaedaung Township Constituency-2.
Yesterday, President U Win Myint and wife Daw Cho Cho cast their ballots in Tamwe Township Constituency where he secured a lower house parliamentary seat in the 2015 Election.
By-election was held for 13 vacant constituencies nationwide on November 3—four vacant seats for lower house parliament, one for Upper House parliament and eight for Region and State parliaments.
Four vacant constituencies for lower house parliament are: Kanpetlet, Lechar, Tamwe and Myingyan constituencies. One vacant constituency for upper house parliament is Myitkyina constituency-2.
Vacant constituencies for region parliament are: Tamu constituency-2 in Sagaing region, Ottwin constituency-2 in Bago region, Thabeikkyin constituency-1 in Mandalay region, Shan Ethnic Affairs constituency in Mandalay region, Minbu constituency-2 in Magway region and Seikkan constituency-2 in Yangon region.
Vacant constituencies for state parliament are: Matupi constituency-1 in Chin State and Yathaedaung constituency-2 in Rakhine State.
The ruling NLD formed the government after winning a landslide victory in the 2015 Election. The NLD secured nine (47 per cent) of 19 vacant seats in the by-election in 2017.
The voter turnout rate was low significantly. The police have filed a case against the woman who cast her vote on behalf of her friend, at No.2 polling booth in Zayatkwin village in Thabeikkyin Township Constituency-1. In addition, at least 20 eligible voters were not included in the voter list in Minbu Township.
