Till date since the military coup in 1962, the number of political prisoners who died in and out of the prisons has reached 535, according to the statement by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) on June 14.

The AAPP compiles the list of political prisoners as much as it can. The AAPP has urged the public to send the facts about those who are not included in the list.

Aung Myo Kyaw, in-charge of Yangon AAPP office said: “We want the government to recognize the political prisoners and deal with the health problems being faced by the political prisoners effectively. So we compiled and released this list.”

Some political prisoners died due to tortures, insufficiency of foods and water and heath care in the prisons and inspection camps while other political prisoners died of being unhealthy resulting from the injuries sustained in the prisons after being released, he continued.

The AAPP has urged the government to implement the systematic assistance tasks for political prisoners, drafting a remedial policy in order to avoid the similar problem.

“The current government is elected by the people. It becomes the government from the opposition party. Under this circumstance, we want the government to implement such matters for political prisoners," he added.

Most of political prisoners died of cancer, TB, kidney and heart-related diseases.

The previous government formed the committee for scrutinizing the remaining political prisoners to set them free. There are demands for defining the term "political prisoner".
