The Bagan-NyaungU area witnessed a significant surge in tourist arrivals in 2023, with visitor numbers more than doubling compared to 2022 according to the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism (Bagan Branch).

"We saw a remarkable increase in both domestic and international visitors in 2023," said U Myo Min Aung, Assistant Director of the Directorate. "Compared to 2022, the number of tourists staying in hotels and motels has more than doubled."

There were 280,848 domestic visitors and 6,374 foreign visitors in 2022, while 2023 saw 474,557 domestic visitors and 14,927 foreign visitors.

While the historic pagodas like Shwezigon, Shwesandaw, Ananda, and Sulamani continued to be major draws, attracting throngs of pilgrims especially during festivals like Thadingyut, the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism has introduced new initiatives to showcase the diverse experiences Bagan has to offer.

These initiatives include seven curated tour programs designed to immerse visitors in the region's rich cultural heritage traditions, stunning natural landscapes, unique birdlife, and artistic treasures. By venturing beyond the iconic pagodas, tourists can gain a deeper appreciation for the multifaceted beauty of Bagan.
