Deadly riot at Myitkyina Prison kills four inmates and injures eight

Four prisoners were killed and eight others were injured during the suppression of the riot that occurred at Myitkyina prison in Kachin State over the issue of amnesty, announced the information team of the State Administration Council (SAC).

Prisoners from men prison cells (6) and (7) in Myitkyina Prison in Kachin State rioted at around 4:10 pm on April 18, saying that it was unfair to grant parole and the staff of the Correctional Department persuaded them to return to their cells, but they did not comply, and continued to yell and curse, causing a disturbance, it said.

The rioting prisoners then destroyed the compound doors of their dormitories, CCTVs, and they tried to go to the disciplinary office in the prison and vandalized it, it said.

In order to maintain the situation due to the riots, the security forces, led by the district police chief, established security around the prison around 4:30 pm red bricks. The staff of the Correctional Department told the rioters to disperse again, but they did not comply and used the wooden sticks, bricks and broken plasters to attack the staff. The staff fired back with riot control weapons and used sticks and shields to quell the situation. The situation was under control at around 5 pm, it said.

In the above incident, four inmates were killed and eight inmates were injured, and the injured inmates were sent to Myitkyina Public Hospital for medical treatment. It will continue to be investigated in accordance with the procedure, announced the SAC.
