A proposal has been submitted to the Lower House of Parliament calling for prevention against environmental deterioration in accord with the law and speeding up rehabilitation tasks.

The proposal was submitted by member of parliament Zaw Min Thein for Laymyathna Constituency during a session of the Lower House in Nay Pyi Taw on July 15.

"We have learnt that Bhutan prescribes a provision in its constitution saying that the country's forest areas shall not be less than 60 percent to prevent environmental degradation. As we all know the situation of our country, we should emphasize on that. With the ongoing bad climate, shall we leave them to posterity? I table this motion to warn that we still have time to tackle the problems based on humane consideration," said the MP.

He pointed out the reasons for deforestation across the globe such as extended crops lands to feed increased population, commercial logging, construction of dams blocking creeks and rivers, establishment of fish and prawn firms, extended construction of roads, bridges, homes and factories and excessive use of natural resources. He commented that physical development had been acquired at the expense of the natural environment.

The parliament approved the motion to discuss after a member of parliament discussed in support of it.
