More armed conflicts occurred in May compared to those occurred in April with a total of 92 armed conflicts across the country, according to an announcement from Myanmar Institute for Peace and Security (MIPS) on June 13.

According to township based conflict monitoring system database of the MIPS, a total of 79 times of armed clashes, 13 times of improvised explosive devices attacks and 92 times of armed incidents occurred during May.

It is because armed conflicts between army and Arakan Army (AA) frequently happened and number of clashes in Shan State is declined as the army extended its one-sided ceasefire, it said.

Although the army and AA encountered almost daily in May, the intensity and duration of the fighting had reduced compared with the fighting occurred in previous months. More conflicts occurred in Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U and Ponnakyun townships in Rakhine State in compared with armed conflicts occurred across the country, it said.

Moreover encounters between Restoration Council of Shan State/ Shan State Army - South (RCSS/SSA), Ta’ang National Liberation Army/ Palaung State Liberation Front (TNLA/PSLF) and Shan State Progressive Party/ Shan State Army – North (SSPP/SSA) were not occurred in May.

Encounters between army, Kachin Independence Army (KIA), TNLA were occurred a little in northern Shan State during May and no army conflict occurred in Kachin State. Overall, the effectiveness of ceasefire extension is still present in Kachin and Shan states, it said.
