The ministry has drafted a national strategic plan to close Internally-Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and is working on the shutdown of IDP camps in Kachin State during the ceasefire period, said Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Win Myat Aye on May 13.

The Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement yesterday held a press conference on the ministry’s undertakings during the third tenure of the government.

This national strategic plan was drafted with the assistance of local and foreign scholars. Under this plan, we are working to systematically close the IDP camps in Kachin, Shan, Kayin and Rakhine, he added.

“We can do the shutdown of IDP camps only after the mine clearance. We have started working on the resettlement plan after the closure of IDP camps. Currently, three IDP camps have been closed. Plans are under way to close two additional camps,” he added.

There are more than 140 IDP camps nationwide where more than 160,000 IDPs are taking shelter, according to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
