JOHOR BARU (The Star) - A total of 2,869 pupils at a primary school here strummed their way into the Guinness World Record for playing the ukulele in the world’s largest music lesson.
Their song? Baby Shark.
The pupils of SJKC Kuo Kuang 2 broke the world record, which was previously held by Japan with 2,480 students playing the ocarina – a wind instrument – during a music lesson in 2014.
School principal Teo Boon Sai said some 95% of the pupils had never touched a ukelele before this but they somehow managed to play well.

“When it was announced officially that we had broken the world record, our pupils were overjoyed as everyone cheered,” he said here yesterday.
Grownce Sdn Bhd chief trainer Ric Cho, who led the music lesson, taught the pupils the musical chords to Baby Shark for half an hour.
Education Ministry’s development and excellence of sports, co-curriculum and art deputy director Razuki A. Rahim said the programme was in line with its policy to encourage pupils to partake in activities with positive development.
“We do not want pupils to solely focus on academics. We want them to venture into other activities too.
“This has been the practice of all schools across the nation and the success of SJKC Kuo Kuang 2 in breaking this record shows that we have so many young musical talents waiting to be nurtured,” he said.
Guinness World Records adjudicator Brian Sobel said this was the sixth world record attempt for the largest musical class category since 2004.
“Although we are dealing with pupils who are attempting to break records, they still need to follow the rules and regulations for the attempt to be valid.
“We had a total of 2,874 pupils participating at the start of the class but we had to disqualify five who needed to go to the toilet during the official attempt,” he said.
