There is a constant flow of people fleeing their homes due to the armed conflict in Myanmar and humanitarian needs continue to rise in Myanmar especially in Kachin State, Mandalay Region and the northwest of the country, announced the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).
In Kachin State, due to the ongoing armed conflict and deployment of military force, 200 households (over 1,100 people) have fled from their homes in Shweku Township, and even in Shweku Township alone, the number of displaced people has reached nearly 20,000 since early March 2023, according to the UNOCHA.
According to the UNOCHA, nearly 10,000 people have been displaced from their homes due to ongoing fighting in Thabeikkyin Township, Mandalay Region since mid-July, and are in urgent need of food aid and health care.
There is an urgent need for food, drinking water, shelter and personal hygiene items for more than 7,150 displaced people in four townships in Sagaing Region in the northwest of the country. In addition, at least 10 houses and churches were destroyed in the eastern part of Bago Region, Chin, Kayin, Mon, and southern Shan states and Tanintharyi Region, UNOCH said in a statement.
As of August 14, 2023, according to the latest figures of the United Nations, the number of internally displaced persons in Myanmar has reached more than 1.9 million, and of these, more than 1.6 million people are those who fled their homes due to the conflict and insecurity that occurred after the political change in February 2021, UNOCHA said in a statement.
