Heavy rainfall in the early hours of June 5 caused flooding in several townships across Yangon Region, according to local sources.
Floodwaters inundated areas in Hlaing, Sanchaung, Kyimyindine, and Ahlon townships, affecting mobile phone shops, electrical appliance stores, and some grocery shops.
“The rain was very heavy throughout the night, accompanied by strong winds. The water level reached knee height, and the flooding was quite severe,” a resident of Sanchaung Township said.
Residents living on the ground floors of apartment buildings were among the hardest hit, as floodwaters entered their homes and caused significant disruption.
“Ground-floor apartments were badly affected. In some cases, water even seeped through brick barriers that had been built to keep floodwaters out, turning homes into ponds. Some households managed to pump the water out, while others had to remove it gradually,” a resident of Ahlon Township said.
The flooding also affected several condominium complexes, with water entering basement parking areas and causing damage to some vehicles.
According to the Myanmar Fire Services Department, water entered the basement parking lot of Yangon River View Condo, located at the corner of Kanna Road and Pyinmapin Road in Kyimyindine Township. Firefighters from the Kyimyindine Township Fire Station responded to the incident and assisted in pumping out the floodwater.
