Chinese citizens suspected of telecom fraud arrested in Northern Shan State

The Information Team of the State Administration Council (SAC) has reported the arrest of 352 Chinese citizens in Muse Township, located in northern Shan State. These individuals are suspected of telecom fraud and were found to be illegally residing in the area.

In March of 2024, the crackdown was a law enforcement cooperation made by the police from the two countries for the first time in the Muse area of northern Myanmar in March, according to a statement released by China's Ministry of Public Security on Monday.

During the operation from March 28 to 31, 352 Chinese citizens, including 15 women, and 486 Myanmar nationals, were arrested for telecom fraud. They were subsequently dealt with in accordance with the law, as reported by the SAC information team.

The SAC also reported that among the suspects, 352 are Chinese nationals, who were handed over to Chinese police for further investigation on Sunday, and the rest will be handled by the Myanmar authorities.

The Myanmar Police Force is currently investigating incidents of telecom fraud and implementing effective measures. In collaboration with neighboring countries, law enforcement teams have initiated a cross-border crackdown on such fraudulent activities, adhering to both regional regulations and domestic laws, as announced by the SAC.
