Two police force members were wounded when a homemade bomb was thrown into a prison van in the city of Mandalay at about 10am today, local sources say.

A man suddenly threw a bomb into a moving prison van near the corner of 78th Street and 41st Street. The van was heading towards Obo Prison after coming from Police Station No.11 in Chanmyathazi Township, Mandalay Region.

One female police officer and one policewoman were injured after being hit by shrapnel.

“The prison van had just left the police station. There were no detainees on board the car that was going to the prison. We learnt that two police members were wounded,” said a nearby resident.

Before the incident this morning, a mine was planted and a protest vinyl was stuck at the traffic police post on the corner of 110th Street and 55th Street in the same township. However, the bomb failed to explode, according to local sources.
