A total of more than 2,400 prisoners, including more than 100 political prisoners and 18 foreign prisoners, were released from Insein Prison, sources said.

As a commemoration of Independence Day, on January 4, prisoners were released from Insein Prison in Yangon, and YBS vehicles were transported them to the respective districts and townships.

"A total of more than 2,400 prisoners have been released. It is known that 18 foreign prisoners are among them. There were more than 100 political prisoners. Majority of them are served their sentences under Section 505 (a). The number is not known exactly," said a person close to Insein prison.

Due to the news that the prisoners will be released, the concerned family members came and waited in front of the entrance and exit of Insein Prison on Hlaing Myit Road from 7 am.

A visitor from Mingaladon Township said, "I came to see if my son would be paroled. I can't sleep since last night because of the news. I don't really expect it to be today because of his long sentence. He was serving his prison term since 2021."

After that, the number of people waiting increased, and around 10:30 am, about 30 YBS vehicles entered the Insein prison to transport the released prisoners to various districts. At around 12 pm, they began to be released.

Among those released, photojournalist Ko Kaung Sett Lin was also released on parole.

"I'm in good health. Now I want my dead mother back. It's been eight months since my mother passed away while I was in prison," he said.

Photojournalist Ko Kaung Sett Lin was arrested while reporting on a protest held on Panbingyi Road, Kyimyindaing Township on December 5, 2021. After that, Ko Kaung Sett Lin was prosecuted under Section 505 (a) and sentenced to prison.
