Colombo (The Island) - At least one police officer will be deployed to each school in the country to ensure the protection of the children when schools recommence on May 06, Minister of Education, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says.

Addressing the media, at Temple Trees, Kariyawasam said that the Ministry had requested security for schools which required protection.

"Security officers have taken the responsibility to protect students and staff. At least one policeman will be deployed to protect each school. We have done everything possible to ensure the safety of schools and the principals have also been informed of safety precautions," Kariyawasam said.

The Ministry of Education had not decided the date of school reopening in an ad hoc manner, the Minister said. All security institutions had been consulted on the matter. "However, we have given Christian religious leaders the opportunity to decide when to start their schools. We are also thinking of covering affected schools through the Suraksha Insurance scheme," he said.

Schools were closed after Easter Sunday suicide bombings.
