The army is not ignoring corruption issue and the action taken by the army is very severe, compared to action taken by the anti-corruption commission, said Brig-Gen Zaw Min Tun from Ministry of Defense during a press conference held at Ministry of Information on May 27.

He said, “The first thing you need to know is the army is not ignoring the corruption issue and has taken action. The army took action on the senior military officials that are higher ranked than me but it is not officially announced. The reporters already knew about them. I don’t want to say it in names.”

He continued, “Although the corruption issue is not handled by the anti-corruption commission, the action taken by us is more server than the action taken by the commission. We are not only issued warning and dismissed but also followed by other actions.”

He said the corruption issues from the army are reported and made complaint to Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services and the regional commands, parliament, president office and the anti-corruption commission.

“We are not ignoring them and have taken action on them. At least we organized military tribunal to inquire. And we took evidences in lines with rules and regulations. If they are found guilty, we took action on them,” said the Brig-Gen.

The commission has no authority to inquire and take action on the corruption cases committed by the military officials, said Aung Kyi, Chairman of the anti-corruption commission said during an interview with RFA on September 30 last year.
