The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) charged 46 people who were found guilty of committing corruption last year, said the ACC’s chair Aung Kyi, at a workshop on the prevention and control against corruption held at the City Hall in Pathein in Ayeyawady Region on March 23.

“According to the testimonies, not only lower-ranking staff but also higher-raking staff had no through understanding of the nature of corruption offences. They were unable to make reforms in time as they don’t understand thoroughly the fact that the inter-departmental relations or some relations with businesses and the public amount to committing corruption. Most of charges are linked to the fact that they continued doing their works as usual,” he added.

The workshop aims to prevent and control the possible corrupt cases.

The government has a burning desire to eradicate corruption and gives a mandate to the commission to perform its duties independently. The government allowed 15 government ministries to open the Corruption Prevention Units (CPU) in, he continued.

Maung Maung, Secretary of Myanmar Consumers Union said: “The people  become accustomed to corruption in our country.”

The workshop was also attended by the Ayeyawady Region Chief Minister, Region Ministers, the Region Parliamentary Speaker, MPs and officials.
