In a recent crackdown, 24 Myanmar workers were apprehended at a construction site in Mahachai, Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand.

The arrests occurred on February 7, as confirmed by reliable sources.

Thai immigration officers and Thai Police have intensified surprise inspections at construction sites and livestock breeding farms across central Thai provinces, including Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, and Nakhon Pathom. Their mission is to identify illegal migrant workers and address potential cases of child labor. Additionally, they are ensuring that workers’ rights align with Thai labor laws, as emphasized by Chair of Joint Action Committee for Burmese Affairs (JACBA), U Moe Gyoe.

The raids resulted in the arrest of these workers, and the situation extends beyond Mahachai. Across Thailand’s 77 provinces, approximately 150 immigrant workers have been detained in both central and eastern regions. Employers who hired these workers are also facing charges, according to Chair of JACBA.

As the crackdown continues, authorities emphasize the importance of not fostering false hopes among those seeking employment in Thailand. Expect more inspections in the future, especially during the period of document renewal and extension.

Among those arrested at the Mahachai construction site, 13 men and 11 women had been in Thailand for just over a month. They now face charges under Thailand’s labor laws for illegal entry and unauthorized work. Their employers will also be held accountable for their actions.
