Dona Taung Kyaw New Asia Road closure hampers Myawady border trade

The Dona Taung Kyaw New Asia Road, a crucial route for Myawady border trade, remains closed, forcing goods and passenger vehicles to divert through the Htoekawkoe Taung Kyaw Road.

Rumors circulated suggesting the potential closure of the latter road following clashes at Myawady and Yinkwe Taung in Kawkareik Township on March 25.

However, instead of closure, travelers have had to rely on the Myawady-Nadi Lin Myaing-Kyawkhoe-Htoekawkoe-Nabu-Kyonedoe Road, known for its hefty tolls, as confirmed by drivers. The escalation of skirmishes in Thingan Nyinaung further complicated transportation routes, with the closure of the Myawady trade zone and Whaeshan road. This closure, coupled with increased toll gate fees, has elevated transportation costs.

Drivers navigating the Myawady-Mawlamyine road expressed concerns over the lack of alternative routes in case of further clashes. Amidst ongoing clashes since March 7 near military camps in Thingan Nyinaung, the closure of the Myawady Trade Zone Road forced travelers to reroute through the Nadi Lin Myaing Road to reach the Htoekawkoe Taung Kyaw Road.

Reports indicate that only six-wheeled vehicles are permitted for trade on the Htoekawkoe Taung Kyaw Road, operating on a rotation of one day up and one day down, in lieu of the typical Myawady border trade trucks.
