When schools reopened in Yangon Region on November 1 for the 2021-2022 academic year, only over 80,000 of the more than 500,000 students who had enrolled came to school, State-run newspapers reported on November 2.

With decreasing Covid-19 cases across Myanmar, public schools, private schools and monastic education schools in all the townships except 46 in nine regions and states close to border areas were reopened on November 1.

Yangon Region has reopened 2,758 government schools, 244 private schools and 230 monastic education schools totalling 3,232. A total of 530,430 students had enrolled before the November 1 reopening. However, on that day, only 83,278 students came to their schools, according to newspaper reports.

The Ministry of Education announced on April 30 this year that primary, middle and high schools would open on June 1 by designating a school enrolment week from 24 to 31 May for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Till June 2, Yangon Region had over 380,000 students.

In the previous years, Yangon region had around 1.1 million students at government and private schools and monastic education schools.
