DMH warns of severe weather in multiple Myanmar regions as Cumulonimbus clouds develop
Published 13 May 2024

Cumulonimbus clouds are currently forming in Nay Pyi Taw, Bago, Yangon, Ayeyawady, and Taninthayi Regions, as well as in Shan, Kayah, Kayin, and Mon States. The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology reported on May 12 that areas along the movement of these clouds may experience severe weather phenomena, including strong winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and hail.

Weather conditions show a few clouds over the North Bay of Bengal and partly to mostly cloudy skies over the Andaman Sea and elsewhere across the Bay of Bengal. Consequently, until noon on May 13, widespread rain or thundershowers are expected in the Taninthayi Region and southern Shan State, with fairly widespread precipitation anticipated in Bago, Yangon, Ayeyarwady Regions, and Northern and Eastern Shan States. Rainfall will be scattered in the upper Sagaing Region and in Kachin, Chin, and Kayin States, and isolated in Nay Pyi Taw, lower Sagaing, Mandalay Regions, and Kayah and Mon States. The certainty level of these forecasts stands at 80%. Meanwhile, weather in the Magway Region and Rakhine State is expected to be partly cloudy.

Considering the formation of Cumulonimbus clouds in the aforementioned regions, there is a possibility of severe weather events such as strong winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and hail. Consequently, the DMH advises residents to remain vigilant in anticipation of these phenomena.

Sea conditions are predicted to be moderate in Myanmar waters, with wave heights expected to range from 5 to 7 feet off and along Myanmar Coasts. Over the next two days, there is a likelihood of a slight increase in daytime temperatures in Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago Regions, and Kachin State.
