U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris said the international community must support Myanmar in restoring democracy, Reuters reported.

Harris arrived in Singapore on August 22 during a trip aimed at bolstering ties with partners in the region as part of Washington's efforts to counter China's growing economic and security influence. On August 23, she met with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and made the remark over Myanmar at a joint press conference.

In the news conference, Harris said the United States wanted to see democracy restored in Myanmar. She said in meeting with the Singaporean PM, they discussed the role the international community must take in helping the Myanmar people restore democracy.

The US has accepted the fact that a ten-member of grouping of ASEAN should lead addressing the issue of Myanmar.

But, she pointed out that ASEAN’s diplomatic way of addressing Myanmar’s issue is going very slowly.

Harris will proceed to Vietnam on August 24 after the Singapore trip.

Her Vietnam trip is the first of a sitting US vice president.
