UEC requests Home Affairs Ministry to scrutinize political parties to comply with political parties’ registration law

The Union Election Commission (UEC) has sent a list of 93 political parties and their central executive committee members to the Ministry of Home Affairs to check whether political parties are complying with the political parties’ registration law, sources said.

A UEC official confirmed the news about the request.

In a letter sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs by the UEC dated on May 24, it has approved the registration of 93 political parties in accordance with the political parties’ registration law. When political parties apply for the right to form political parties, they have already signed an agreement to abide by the provisions of Section 6 of the political parties’ registration law.

The Sub-section (III), Sub-section (a), Section 12 of the Law on Registration of Political Parties stated that a party shall not have the right to subsist as a political party if it is involved with contacting or abetting directly or indirectly an insurgent organization and individuals in revolt with arms against the State, organization and individuals designated by the State as committing terrorist acts or organization declared as un-lawful association or members of the said organization.

The Section 407 of the 2008 Constitution stated that a political party shall have no right of continued existence if a political party had been declared an unlawful association under the existing law, or directly or indirectly contacting or abetting the insurgent group launching armed rebellion against the Union or the associations and persons determined by the Union to have committed terrorist acts or the association declared to be an unlawful association, or directly or indirectly receiving and expending financial, material and other assistance from a foreign government, a religious association, other association or a person from a foreign country, or abusing religion for political purpose.

Moreover the Section 408 of the 2008 Constitution stated that if the body having authority to register political parties finds that a political party infringes one of the stipulations contained in Section 407, the party’s registration shall be revoked.
