Thailand Embassy in Yangon introduces dual visa application system: Tokens and Online Bookings
Published 20 February 2024

In a significant policy shift, the Thailand Embassy in Yangon has unveiled a revamped visa application process. Effective immediately, applicants can choose between two methods: the traditional in-person approach or the modern online booking system.

Tokens for In-Person Applications: On February 21st, the embassy will kick off its in-person visa appointment system. Applicants can queue up at 2:00 p.m. to secure their spot. For February 22nd and 23rd, 200 tokens will be issued per day. Officials will meticulously verify passports during the queueing process. Only correct matches will be recorded, ensuring that token numbers remain non-transferable.

For online Visa Appointments: Starting February 22, applicants can book online visa appointments 30 days in advance. A daily quota of 200 tokens will be available for online applicants and for Potential Changes Ahead: on February 26th, the embassy will assess the situation. Depending on demand and efficiency, they may decide to shift entirely to either an in-person or online visa appointment system.

The surge in travelers to Thailand since the beginning of February prompted this strategic move. Previously, long queues formed outside the Thai embassy in Yangon as people sought visas. To alleviate congestion, the embassy introduced a token system, initially issuing 400 tokens per day. Now, with the dual approach, applicants have more flexibility.

Remember, if you plan to return to Myanmar within two weeks of visiting Thailand, no visa is required.
