Sandbanks are hindering transportation in upper area of Mawlaik in upper Chindwin River and vessels are run aground in the river.

“It is difficult to travel in Roelar water course. The depth of the water in the area is about over three feet. There are about 35 vessels and it took half day to cross the place. We have sand and gravel pumping machine so we can clear the sandbanks along the way. Some are transferred their cargos to smaller vessels. We paid taxes and we want the authorities to take action. It can take one or two days to clear sand and gravels. Most of the vessels are full of cargos and they cannot travel in that depth of water. Shuttles are also running in the water course and it took about half an hour to travel in the water course,” said a crew of the vessel.

More sandbanks may emerge in upper Phaungpyin and Homalin at the confluence of Uru and Chindwin rivers next month.

“The water course is blocked as water is shallow and sand and gravels are found everywhere. About 25 or 30 vessels and seven bamboo rafts are blocked in the area,” said Ko Toe, a crew from cargo vessel.
