Southern Shan State conflict forces over 89,000 IDPs to flee in 49 days

The number of displaced people has reached more than 89,000 in 49 days due to armed conflicts in Hsihseng, Hopong and Loilem townships in Southern Shan State, and 49 civilians have been killed and 60 injured, reported the Pa-O Youth Organization (PYO) on March.

The PYO also included the above point in its release after surveying the situation of fighting in Hsihseng, Hopong and Loilem townships, Southern Shan State from January 21 to March 9.

There are 6,000 people IDPs in Hsihseng Township, 20,099 war refugees in Hopong Township and 63,179 war refugees in Loilem Township in Southern Shan State, according to the PYO.

Among the people fleeing the war, more than 23,000 people have fled the war from Kayah State to southern Shan State since 2022, according to the PYO.

In Southern Shan State, 49 civilians were killed and 60 were injured due to armed conflicts between the joint forces of Tatmadaw and the Pa-O National Army (PNA) and the alliances of Pa-O National Liberation Army (PNLA), according to the PYO.

Among the causes of civilian casualties are airstrikes, heavy weapons attacks and drone attacks were involved, it said.

In the armed conflict in Southern Shan State, 408 airstrikes and 1,506 rounds of artillery fire damaged 196 buildings, it said.

90 percent of the building damage was caused by airstrikes, heavy weapon fire and drone attacks, it said.

The PYO said that it was published based on the ground information and online information that it had access to and the numbers on the ground could be higher.

Due to the intense armed conflict in Hsihseng Township, the PNLA announced that locals should not visit their homes and take temporary refuge in places away from armed conflicts.
