NAY PYI TAW-The National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC), led by Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, held discussions with representatives of the Shanni Nationalities Solidarity Organization (SNSO) in Nay Pyi Taw on June 5 as part of ongoing peace and national reconciliation efforts.
The meeting took place at the Shwe San Eain Hotel and was attended by NSPNC Chairman Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, Secretary Lt-Gen Min Naing, committee members, and a delegation from the SNSO led by Vice Chairman (1) Saw Sai Kham.
During the talks, Lt-Gen Yar Pyae acknowledged the organization's cooperation with the Myanmar military in maintaining regional stability and protecting local communities. He encouraged the group to openly discuss its future political and security-related plans and pledged continued coordination on regional development initiatives.
Speaking on behalf of the SNSO, Vice Chairman Saw Sai Kham welcomed the opportunity to participate in the government's 100-day peace initiative. He reaffirmed the organization's commitment to working with the military to promote stability and support development projects in areas inhabited by Shanni communities.
The discussions focused on a range of issues, including regional peace and security, development challenges, humanitarian assistance for internally displaced persons, and cooperation between local communities and the government. Participants also exchanged views on the aspirations of Shanni (Tai Leng/Tai Lai) communities for self-administered status in accordance with the law in parts of Kachin State and Sagaing Region.
A key topic was the recognition of the Shanni ethnic identity, including the official use of the ethnic designation on national registration documents and the desire for greater recognition of Shanni-populated areas. NSPNC officials explained possible constitutional procedures through which such matters could be submitted to the legislature for consideration.
Lt-Gen Min Naing, Secretary of the NSPNC, also outlined potential next steps for peace building and regional development based on the discussions.
The meeting concluded with closing remarks from both sides and the exchange of commemorative gifts. The talks are part of the government's broader peace initiative launched under Announcement No. 1/2026 on April 21, 2026. The initiative, backed by the President-led Central Committee for National Unity and Peace building, seeks to facilitate inclusive dialogue without preconditions, with the aim of ending armed conflict and resolving political issues through political means.
