SAC chairman affirms election will proceed under 2008 Constitution

Myanmar will hold the election in accordance with the 2008 Constitution, with every effort made to ensure its occurrence, stated Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC).

He made this announcement during the SAC meeting (3/2024) held in Nay Pyi Taw on June 7.

He emphasized that the fifth goal of the roadmap and the ultimate aim of the SAC is to hold a free and fair multi-party democracy election. He highlighted that the incorrect voters' list in the 2020 election was a significant issue in the country's history, and it is crucial to compile accurate voters' lists to avoid such incidents in the future. Preparations will be made to ensure the accuracy of these lists. A population and household census will be conducted in October, with necessary preparations to address potential challenges. The census results will provide population statistics, enabling a properly conducted election.

The Senior General noted that measures must be taken to conduct the census as extensively as possible, even in areas where it is challenging to do so on the ground. The census will be conducted in accessible towns and villages, with security measures in place for related townships. The election will adhere to the 2008 Constitution, and since holding the election is the ultimate aim of the SAC, it will proceed without fail. Therefore, he urged SAC members to make concerted efforts to successfully implement the roadmap and ensure the election takes place as planned.
