Fresh onions produced from all over the areas of Myanmar entered the Pakokku onion market at the end of January, and the highest price was 1700 kyats per viss, sources said.

In addition to local onions from Yawchaung to the Pakokku onion market, onions produced from Yenangyoung, Seikpyu and Sinpyukyun areas have also entered.

On January 30, when more than 60,000 visses entered the Pakokku onion market, the price of small onions reached from 700 to 1,000 kyats per viss, from 1,100 to 1,400 kyats per viss for medium size onions and from 1,500 to 1,700 kyats per viss for big size onions.

"It's all over the place. Prices vary according to quality. The highest price for onions from the Yenangyoung is 1,325 kyats per viss. On the side of Seikpyu and Sinpyukyun, the quality is good, and we can get up to 1,700 per viss. We can sell everything we buy," said an onion trader.

In the third week of last January, the price of rain-fed onions was up to 2,000 kyat per viss, and at the end of this January, the price decreased slightly due to a decrease in buyers.

According to the current prices, farmers may be less profitable, but they are able to work more than in previous years.

The price of new rain-fed onions, which started to be traded at the end of 2023, fell in the market, but later on, when there were a lot of buyers, the price increased, and the price reached more than 3,000 kyats per viss.
