The foundation planned US$ 17 million for rehabilitation work in Rakhine, Kachin and Kayin states including COVID-19 vaccine donation, said Mr. Sasakawa, Chairman of the Nippon Foundation and the Japanese government's special envoy for peace in Myanmar.

He made the remarks at a press conference held at the Melia Hotel on Kabaraye Pagoda Road in Yangon on the afternoon of November 18.

"The total amount of fund we have set aside to support Myanmar is US$ 17 million. We also have a Nippon Foundation office in Yangon, Myanmar, so the foundation will provide all this support directly,” said Mr. Sasakawa.

Mr. Sasakawa said he would donate at least one million COVID-19 vaccines as soon as possible as he heard from the public that the country still needed more vaccines for COVID-19.

"During my visit, I heard a lot from the public about the need for more COVID-19 vaccines in Myanmar. For this reason, I will donate at least one million COVID vaccines. If possible, I will try to donate more. I will do my best to make this donation as soon as possible and I will donate the COVID vaccine through the Myanmar Red Cross Society,” he said.

He said US$ 8.5 million would be earmarked for the construction of primary schools and secondary schools in addition to the construction of houses for refugees in Rakhine State.

In addition, the foundation will provide a total of US$ 17 million in rehabilitation work for refugees in Kachin and Kayin states, and the Nippon Foundation in Yangon will provide direct assistance, he said.
