Myanmar will hold the 2020 general election in November, and there will be new rules regarding  election campaigns due to the Covid-19 outbreak, said Myint Naing, member of the Union Election Commission (UEC).

He disclosed the information in response to a media question during a press conference held at the UEC office on June 4.

“The date of the first election was announced two months and 24 days before. The second election was announced four months before. As usual, the election will be held in November. When the election was held on November 7, the announcement was made four months before. We will announce a suitable date this year for political parties so that they can conduct election campaigns,” Myint Naing said.

For election campaigns and electoral tasks this year, a separate team will be formed with eight departments including the Ministry of Health.

“For canvassing, there are likely to be new rules and regulations because of the Covid-19 outbreak. We will form a separate team comprising eight departments including the Ministry of Health. New rules will be adopted and publicized,” Myint Naing said.

As to whether election could be held in Rakhine State and Wa Self-Administered Zone, he said, the matter had been submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Defence and the Union Government, and any reply had not come yet.
