Myanmar opposes embassies issuing joint statement on the fighting in Kayin State

Ministry of Foreign Affairs is opposed the embassies that issued a joint statement on the shootings in Kayin State, which interfered in the internal affairs of the host country, according to the report from state-run newspapers on December 27.

Western embassies based in Yangon issued a joint statement on December 24 in concerned with the ongoing clashes in Kayin State. The statement added that security forces were attacking civilians and other allegations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a diplomatic letter to the embassies on December 26 stating that the contents of their statement were based on unverified information based on the opponents of the government, terrorists and insurgents. The state-run newspaper quoted the statement as saying that the unilateral broadcast of the baseless information and allegations violated the provisions of the UN Charter and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and it warned against doing so and objected to the statement as it is interfered in the internal affairs of the host country.

The embassies issued a joint statement on the Kayin State incident, which was opposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are Australia, Canada, EU Embassy in Myanmar, Embassies of EU member states such as the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Sweden, as well as New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States.

A joint statement issued by the ambassadors of these countries to Myanmar, Chargé d'Affaires and Chief of Mission stated that the recent attacks on civilians in Kayin State, including the use of heavy artillery, violate international humanitarian law and must be stopped. The attacks have forced thousands of people to flee their homes and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. It called for an immediate end to the attacks in Kayin State and across the country and for the safety of all civilians in accordance with international law.

In a statement issued by the United Nations Security Council on November 10, they also called for the full and safe access of all humanitarian assistance to all people in need, and the full protection of humanitarian and medical personnel, as well as for the safety and security of the people.
