Myanmar nationals stranded in Phayar Thonzu amid Thai illegal entry arrests

As the news of arrests for illegal entry into Thailand spreads, Myanmar nationals attempting to cross the border find themselves stranded in Phayar Thonzu, a border town situated on the Myanmar-Thai border in Kyarinseikgyi Township, Kayin State.

The situation has escalated since the State Administration Council (SAC) enacted the Military Service Law on February 10. Many Myanmar citizens flocked to Phayar Thonzu with hopes of reaching Thailand, but the journey is far from straightforward.

According to local reports, thousands of Myanmar nationals are currently stuck in Phayar Thonzu. They have sought refuge in various places, including hotels, motels, churches, and compounds. The Thai authorities’ recent statement about taking action against those entering illegally has further complicated matters, leaving most of these individuals stranded in the town.

The majority of these travelers initially arrived in Phayar Thonzu through travel agents or brokers. However, as time passed, they encountered daily challenges related to their livelihood. While more than 100 people aspire to enter Thailand each day, only a mere ten manage to do so illegally, leaving the rest in a state of limbo.

Interestingly, the service fees for those attempting to enter Thailand have skyrocketed. Previously around Ks.1 million per person, the cost has now surged to Ks.4 million, according to brokers.
