The man arrested for torturing a Dagon University student, who was trafficked and sold into slave labour on fishing rafts, died of atherosclerotic as he was sent to Yangon General Hospital after suffering from hypertension while in custody, according to Kyauktada Township Police Station.

"He died on December 8 of hypertension and atherosclerotic. He was Kyaw Aung, a fishing raft supervisor," said a police officer on duty at the station.

Kyaw Aung was arrested in late November for torturing the university student.

Human traffickers sold Myo Thura Tun, a final year student from Dagon University majoring in history, to fish wholesalers in Pyapon Township, Ayeyawady Region, for K700,000.

The student was sold into labour on a fishing raft when he visited Yangon on a task as asked by his parents on October 2.

After about 45 days, he was released as his parents paid the money back. He was injured as he was tortured by Kyaw Aung on the fishing raft.

A lawsuit has been filed against 19 people for their involvement in the trafficking case.

The suspects will appear in court at West District Court on December 20.
