The 1990 Elected Candidates Group  and political forces will jointly form a political party named “United Nationalities Democracy Party” said David Hla Myint, Secretary of the 1990 Elected Candidates Group.

The party will be chaired by Naing Naing, a former lower house MP from Pazundaung Township in 1990. Khun Tun Oo who is the chair of the 1990 Elected Candidates Group and former Thibaw Township Lower House MP will serve as a party leader.

David Hla Myint said: “The name of Khun Tun Oo will not be put in the list when we apply to the Union Election Commission (UEC). He is chair of the SNLD. But, he is the chair of the 1990 Elected Candidates Group. He will play a party leader role as the establishment of the new party is based on those elected in 1990. Naing Naing will serve as the party’s chair. The party leader and the party chair are different.”

Seven people from ethnic parties and one Bhamar will serve as patrons of the party. The central executive committee will comprise 21 members.

The new party is formed with four major groups—the 1990 Elected Candidates Group, the United National Democratic Organization (UNDO), the Union Ethnic Farmers Union and the Investigation Committee for the Human Rights Violation. More than 260 already-existed offices owned by these groups will be used as the party’s offices.

Dr. Myo Nyunt, Spokesperson of the ruling National League for Democracy said: “We welcome all political parties which have genuine trust in democracy. At present, it is too early to give comment as I will have to assess their undertakings.”

The United Nationalities Democracy Party (UNDP) will make alliances with the United Nationalities Alliance (UNA) and the Democratic Party for a New Society (DPNS). Currently, there is no relation with other parties.

The United Nationalities Democracy Party (UNDP) will run for seats only in seven regions in the 2020 General Election. But the candidates elected in the 1990 election will not compete in the upcoming election. The UNDP will help support ethnic parties in states for the achievements in the election.

The UNDP will apply to the UEC for the registration after the water festival.
