Forced marriage makes up over 70% of all human trafficking cases last year

More than 70 percent of the human trafficking cases that occurred across Myanmar in 2018 are related to forced marriages with Chinese men, according to sources released by Myanmar Anti-human Trafficking Police Force on January 2.

In 152 of the 206 cases, Myanmar women were reportedly sold into forced marriages with Chinese men.

Other cases involved forced labour, prostitution, illegal adoption and illegal surrogacy.

In those cases, 38 men and 279 women totalling 317 were trafficked while 333 men were arrested and 266 suspects are still at large.

Yangon Region experienced 55 human trafficking cases, the largest number in the whole country. In other states and regions, there were 54 cases in Shan State, 27 in Mandalay Region, 24 in Kachin State, 15 in Ayeyawady Region, 10 in Bago Region, six in Rakhine State, five in Nay Pyi Taw, three each in Sagaing Region and Mon State, two in Magway and one each in Taninthayi Region and Kayin State.
